Case Notes:

Lance Mailer Smith aka Lance Anthony Smith - “A man lower than a snakes belly”

Smith is the President of the Glenroy, Melbourne, Returned and Services League (RSL).  He has been a “Returned Veteran” member at Glenroy RSL since 1972

11 Jul 2013

14th Jul 2013

He has never served in the Australian Defence Force and has no entitlement to be an ex Service member of the RSL. He is a liar, fraud, cheat and wannabe who has deceived all those who surround and trust him, including his “friends” and family.

The Glenroy RSL are not prepared to accept the truth about Smith and have fumbled and stalled, however, the Victoria State RSL Headquarters took quick and simple action by requesting Smith produce evidence of his bona fides by a given date. He has not produced evidence because he cannot. We are confident that the RSL, will, after due process, deal with Smith in an appropriate and decisive manner. That action will be advised in a future update.

See below the Glenroy RSL Website listing Smith as their current President:

We are reliably advised that his registration at the RSL contains the following information:

Lance SMITH DOB 16 Sep 43

Area of service - SVN – ARA   (South Vietnam – Australian Regular Army)

Regimental Number: 376438

Address: xxxxxxxxxxxxx  Westmeadows - Vic 3049

Ph: (H) - xxxxxxxxxxx

Email: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Financial member of Glenroy RSL.

He has always made it known to members of the Glenroy RSL that his Vietnam Service was with 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), on their first tour of Vietnam during 1965. He stated to some, that his “tour” consisted of three months to others, seven months and again seven weeks.

Here is a newspaper article that appeared in the Melbourne Herald Sun on 26 April 2013

When being interviewed by a journalist Smith produced a heavily black ink censored document, that he said proved he was a Vietnam Veteran, he would not allow the journalist to read the document but the journalist noticed there was reference to a “Lieutenant Colonel M” and also the Reference number B1794791. If you type that number into search engine Google with the word “Court” a document relating to a 2011 Court Martial of a “Lieutenant Colonel M” will appear. Below is the front page of the document. The whole document is easily found using Google as suggested above

We contacted the author of the document and received the following advice:

“Dear Mr XXXXXXXXXx

I can advise that the number B1794791 is a unique identifier assigned to the document by AGS’s electronic document management system. As the number is unique and software generated, I do not believe it would have been used on a document prepared in 1966, other than by coincidence.

Yours sincerely

What are the chances of Smith’s document containing the words “Lieutenant Colonel M” and having the serial number B1794791 being different from the document we have located? It can be concluded that the document that Smith waves around has nothing to do with his military history and further illustrates, the extent this con man will lie and cheat to “prove” he is a Vietnam Veteran

Smith has said he served under a different Surname but used his Christian name. We have checked military records and it is a fact that no person with the Christian name of “Lance” served with 1RAR in Vietnam during 1965.

All Australian Veterans, since the First World War, remember their Regimental number, Smith claims that his was 376438.  He quoted that number when he joined the Glenroy RSL; he also has a set of “Dog Tags” (metal identification tags that are worn around the neck by soldiers) with that number engraved on them. In fact, that Regimental number has never been issued by the Department of Defence to any person. He claims he changed one number of his Regimental number when he joined the RSL.

Again it is easily proven that no person with a Christian name “Lance” and a Regimental service number with one different number, from that quoted above served with 1RAR in Vietnam in 1965.

We phoned Smith and sent him emails on numerous occasions to give him the opportunity to explain his military service, and advise why Central Army Records Office (CARO) could not locate a file, and why his name is not listed on the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Vietnam Nominal Roll.  Here are two unedited rambling examples of his attempt to explain the lack of information about his Military Service.

Received from Smith 13 March 2013:

“Lance Smith <smithlance918@ymail.com>

13 Mar

to me

xxx  as I said I would send you an email ,will not understand the situation however I spoke to my solicitor today anyway the problem is that back in 66

I was a witness in case re stolen weapons I had severe threats which after this and have worried about my wife ,any after today he is going to apply for a document to send to you this will take approx  7 - 10 days get ,if you promise to destroy it, I will post if you can supply your address if its ok. this is all I want to say at this stage dont like emails

Lance Smith”

Considering that Smith claims to have served in Vietnam in 1965 and the “case of stolen weapons” occurred in 1966, there is no reason for Smith to claim to have served under a different name. In any case, before the Vietnam War he was known as Lance Smith, during the Vietnam war he was known as Lance Smith, and from the end of the war until today, he is still Lance Smith.

Our response:

“13 Mar

Dear Lance Smith

Please give me the name of your Solicitor and will save him the trouble and expense of locating your document.

I have no interest in "Secret documents" or events that occurred after your Vietnam service with 1RAR in 1965.

Have handled hundreds of enquiries and have no problem in establishing the truth as will happen in this case.

Regards”

Mr xxxxx   I understand you phoned the RSL again last weeek ok, I have been told not to contact you however I know that xxxx and xxxxxxxt sent you the email in the first place we tracked that, firtsly i changed my number to keep quite what happened in 65,which is my business.

This morning we have been to the city to Australian Federal Police HQ, I have not committed any offence but doing this I will be suspended by the RSL. for the number change .The AFP want to know how you onbtained files from various places DVA,CARO,and other places, they know who you are,you listen to people who i have not seen since i was 17 years old who have not a clue what i have done, and i am being victimized”

Our response to this “dribble”

“To: Lance Smith <smithlance918@ymail.com>

Smith

You are a liar, you have never served in Vietnam and have been fooling the RSL since 1972.

Please give me details of the AFP Officer who has taken your complaint and I will be happy to brief him as to how a search was done to establish whether or not you have ever served in the Australian Defence Force.

It is our intention to expose you as a liar, cheat and wannabe on our web site in the very near future”

During a telephone conversation (relayed by a welfare officer, because Smith has had throat surgery for cancer) Smith claimed to have served under a different name and also claimed to have had his name removed from the Department of Veterans Affairs Vietnam Nominal Roll, for the safety of his family because he was witness in a weapons theft.

Smith claims to have been granted an Intermediate Pension (Gold Card) from DVA. All Vietnam Veterans who contract cancer are looked after by DVA. We challenge him to produce a DVA Entitlement Card. The truth of the matter is that he has no DVA Card.

We strongly suggest that Smith is not known by DVA

At this stage we have no photographs of Smith wearing Vietnam Medals, but we are reliably advised that he wears them on commemorative occasions. We are confident that after publishing this on our web site, recent photographs of Smith wearing false medals will be sent to us.

Notice in the photograph below that Smith is wearing a Returned from Active Service Badge (RASB)

Returned from Active Service Badges, are issued by the Australian Government to those returning from warlike service. The RASB is a personal issue and not issued to relatives of deceased ex-members. Each Badge has a serial number registered to the recipient. The Badge Smith is wearing can not be his, and clearly provides evidence that Smith is falsely claiming to be a “Returned Veteran”.

We spoke to a genuine Vietnam Veteran, Welfare Officer/Vice President from the Glenroy RSL who is a good friend of Smith; he vouched unequivocally for Smith as being a genuine Vietnam Veteran. The Welfare Officer/Vice President is either asleep on the job, or part of the plot.

Smith, for Forty One years has enjoyed the false status of a Returned Serviceman. To have planned and perpetrated this act, he must be a miserable human being, always anxiously awaiting the tap on the shoulder that would expose him as a liar, cheat and thief of honour. His “tap on the shoulder” has arrived and it is time for Smith to clean out his President’s desk and get the hell out of the Glenroy RSL where he does not qualify to be an ex Service Member.

It is a painful reality that ex Service Organisations are intent on building membership numbers at any price. Ex Service Organisations should be doing the work that we do, preserving the dignity of their iconic organizations, however, ex Service Organisations have succumbed to our “touchy feely” society and gone “overboard” with politically correct confidentiality doctrine.

We implore Ex Service Organisations Australia wide to audit their membership and weed out criminals like Smith before they are able to further influence and corrupt their organization. Smith is a criminal because he has committed an offence against the:   Defence Act 1903 Part VII, Section 80A

80A.    Falsely representing to be returned soldier,

The maximum penalty for that offence is a fine $3,300 or six months imprisonment or both.

In recent years we have exposed many Wannabe ex Service Organisation Presidents and senior executives, here are some of them.

Schmidt, DiTullio, Copeland, Meehan, Fergusson, Skelton, Moselen, Gibbons, Crane, Hardy, Fenton, Hammal, Bees, Halim, Day, Wright, Nemtas, Jordon

If we can stumble over so many, we shudder to think how many more Wannabes there are out there, who have infiltrated the Veteran Community and taking advantage of Veterans benefits and privileges without the burden of having to earn them.

Smith is a blatant conman who has been able to fool everybody, for Forty One years, he has conned the Glenroy, Sub Branch of the Returned and Services League, local politicians, his family and the general public into believing he is a returned Vietnam Veteran. It is also remarkable that over 12 years ago he was the elected President of The Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, North West Sub Branch.

He has mistreated his family and conned them into believing that his disgraceful behaviour towards them is because of his Vietnam experience. On the “Pecking Order Chart” of Wannabes he is in the category of those lower than snake’s bellies. His years of “doing good” at the Glenroy RSL mean nothing, because his presence is based on planned and executed deception.

As is the case with many wannabes, Smith, knowing that he has been caught, now feigns illness and blames ANZMI.  We have no guilt, we doubt he is really ill, and if he is, the fault lies squarely on his dishonest, lying, cheating, wannabe shoulders.

Smith has no place in the Veteran Community and he should be excised like an unwanted wart.

Having lost his place in the RSL we are happy to allow him to occupy space on our web site for his posterity.

We urge all Ex Service Organisations to audit their executive membership and take appropriate action before we have to.

If you see Lance Smith ask him to do any of the five actions shown below to prove his Military Service:

Quote his Regimental number.

Produce his DVA Treatment Card.

Quote his RAS Badge number.

Produce his Record of Service or Discharge Certificate

Introduce you to a 1RAR Veteran who will attest to serving alongside him in Vietnam

Be assured this snake can’t do it

Lance Mailer Smith

Have no doubt, Smith is a fraud, medals cheat, wannabe and despicable liar. He is sticking to his story that he is a Returned Ex Serviceman who served in Vietnam. The corner that he has painted himself into is getting smaller, perhaps soon he will concede he has been living a lie for more than forty years. In our original exposure we asked for a photograph of Smith wearing medals and here he is:

The photograph was taken in the 1990s when he was elected the inaugural President of the North West Sub Branch, of the Vietnam Veterans Association Australia (VVAA). He is wearing the full “Monty” of medals and badges:

Australian Active Service Medal

Recognises service of Australian Defence Force and certain other persons in prescribed warlike operations for service only during the period 1945 to 1975. Recipients of Vietnam Medal (29/5/64-27/1/73

Vietnam Medal

Eligibility - 28 days in ships or craft on inland waters or off the coast of Vietnam.  One or more days on the posted strength of a unit or formation on land.  One operational sortie over Vietnam or Vietnamese water by aircrew on the posted strength of a unit.  Official visits either continuous or aggregate of 30 days. One day or more by members of accredited philanthropic organisations attached to Australian forces in an official capacity for full-time duty

Vietnam Campaign Medal

The Australian government maintained the basic qualifying criteria specified by the Republic of Vietnam for allied troops. To be eligible for the medal a person must have completed a minimum period of 181 days, either continuous or aggregated, unless: killed on active service (KIA); wounded in action i.e. classified as a Battle Casualty and evacuated as a result of those wounds; or  captured and later released or escaped.   Note that medical evacuation from the area of operations for any reasons other than wounds received in action does not constitute an exemption from meeting the minimum qualifying period

 Infantry Combat Badge

Members of the Royal Australian Infantry Corps who in an infantry posting as part of an Infantry Battalion were deployed for at least 90 days to an operational area.

Returned from Active Service Badge(shown as a smudge on his left lapel)

The Returned from Active Service Badge (RASB) is issued to Australian Defence Force personnel who have rendered warlike service.

Smith has no entitlement to wear any of the above. Not only did he not serve in Vietnam, he has never served in the Defence Force anywhere at any time.

Smith has not, and cannot produce evidence of his service because he has none.

Based on lies and deception he has been a member of the Glenroy Returned Services League (RSL) for Forty One years. He has been President of a Sub Branch of the VVAA and he has been President of the Glenroy RSL.

There are members of the Glenroy RSL in despair because of the level of dishonesty and fraud perpertrated by Smith who was a trusted friend. They would have been better off befriending a Red Back Spider.

We urge all ex Service organizations involved with Smith at all levels, to wipe his name from Honour Boards and expel him with ignominy.

Update Lance Smith  - His daughter is revolting

Tirades from unbelievers are all part of the work description at ANZMI.  Below is Smith’s daughter telling us that although Smith is a liar he is a “good man”. We are also accused of causing Smith to have “Strokes”. Strange how the “strokes” occurred on the very first day that Smith knew that his forty two years of fraud and deception were over.

The good lady also challenged us to print her email, we have risen to the challenge and iterate that for the last forty two years Smith has been deliberately deceiving the Veteran Community and his family. We also wonder if Smith received honorariums and other benefits for his work with ex Service Organizations, because if he did, the Police may desire to knock on his door in relation to receiving benefits from his fraud.

Veterans all over Australia are sickened that this moron could persist for forty two years with his deception including being elected President of two major ex Service Organisations. He even invited friends to attend his “Military Unit” Association functions, and introduced them to people he claimed to have served with in Vietnam – duhhhhhhh. There is no doubt that Smith is a very skilled con man and we are confident that his suddenly developed “Strokes” are more of his evil antics.

We now apologise for saying that Smith is “Lower than a snakes belly” because such a statement is an insult to snakes everywhere. Now read his daughter’s email:

Update – Lance Smith

Smith is now reaping the bitter fruits of his lies and deception by being given the opportunity to defend his actions in the Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows Magistrates Court. State Police all over Australia are now taking swift actions against Smith’s ilk. The Melbourne newspaper, Herald Sun published the report below on the 19th June 2013.  http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/ex-rsl-official-lance-smith-accused-of-deception/story-fni0fit3-1226665922353

The unfolding court drama will be reported as Smith plays out his legal rights. There are now many genuine Veterans in State Police Forces throughout Australia who abhor the theft of their honour by people like Lance Smith.

Wannabes, liars and frauds in the Veteran community have never had a greater opportunity for a meeting with a Magistrate.

Lance Smith Update  -  The Final Chapter

On 1 July 2013 ANZMI finally got Lance Smith, the former President of the Glenroy RSL, before a Magistrate.

The Magistrate had this to say during the hearing (inter alia):

“Veterans have fought and died to earn the right to be awarded medals.  I cannot see an offence treated so lightly, in 28 years I have never dealt withsuch a despicable case.  Veterans sacrifice deserves respect.

For 41 years nobody detected these fraudulent activities.  It now becomes a difficult sentencing matter.”

The Prosecutor said (inter alia)

“Smith's actions are an insult to the brave men and women who have given their lives in the defence of Australia, Vietnam veterans with PTSD see the actions of SMITH as a "Kick in the teeth"

The Magistrate  continued

"Stand up Mr SMITH - I see no application for restitution. Your behaviour is disgraceful - you are an insult to our brave men and women who served with distinction, sadly some of these veterans paid the ultimate price.  This court must denounce your actions at the Glenroy RSL - let me state quite clearly that without the character evidence given by Mr LANCASTER and your age (69) I would have sent you to jail for six months today.  How you got away with this charade for 41 years is beyond me.By your illegal wearing of medals you put yourself out as a Vietnam veteran. That was the greatest insult to genuine Vietnam veterans.

On charges three and four I sentence you to imprisonment for six months under Section 20 (suspended for 12 months) - and fine you $2000.00 - (Improper use of decorations &impersonate a veteran).

On charges one & two,  Proceeds of crime and financial deception, you are fined $2500.00 Time to pay  Commencing 1 AUG $250 PER MONTH UNTIL PAID IN FULL.Now released to the community”.

Newspaper report below:

Glenroy RSL executive were unable to grasp the reality that their long time “friend” was a lying, cheating wannabe. Smith’s deception required a lot of detailed planning throughout the entire 41 years of his fraud.  The Victoria State President of the RSL said “he was disappointed that the RSL did not twig it earlier but they are pretty clever people the way they do it”

Smith’s demise was a classic case for ANZMI.

A member of the public reported their suspicions to ANZMI.  After an initial investigation, we had reason to believe the allegations were true.  ANZMI determined that Smith had no Defence Service Record of any kind, and advised the State Police, the Glenroy RSL and the RSL, Victoria StateHeadquarters. After careful analysis of the responses from Smith, it was determined that Smith was a liar, cheat and wannabe and he was exposed on our web site.

When cornered Smith feigned serious illness and resigned from the RSL, and perhaps thought he was ahead of the game, until the Police arrived at his doorstep and charged him with various offences, for which he was found guilty and received an appropriate punishment.

Be aware that if you are a lying wannabe your door may be next the Police knock on. Police or not, we will expose you on this web site.

Smith’s fate is a model for what awaits those who steal the honour of Veterans.

This is published in the public interest, particularly that of the Vietnam Veteran Community. All information presented here is fact and the truth. Reports from private citizens are supported by statements of fact and statutory declarations.
