Date of Entry: 05/02/2019
Surname: Da Silva
Christian Names: Jose Maria Olivira
Country: Australia
State or Province: Queensland
City or Town: Ipswich
Service #: R65069
Service: Royal Australian Navy (RAN)
Branch: Naval Air Mechanic
Commencement of service: 1959
Case Notes:

Jose Da Silva was an Aircraft Mechanic who served in Vietnam for 395 days with the RAN Helicopter Flight.

For his service he has been presented with four medals, however he wears six.

The medals he wears are:

Australian Active Service Medal (AASM)

Vietnam Medal (VM)

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (RVCM)

Australian Defence Medal (ADM)

HMAS Sydney Medal - unofficial self purchased medal

Vietnam Logistic Support Medal - unofficial self purchased medal

He has added two extra self purchased medals to his rack. They are the commemorative (HMAS) Sydney medal and the Logistic Support medal. These are superfluous tin medals, that must not be worn with Defence medals on the left breast.

Da Silva did not serve on HMAS Sydney during the war and we can find no documentary evidence of any association with HMAS Sydney. His AASM, VM and RVCM cover all of his Vietnam medals entitlements.

We welcome Da Silva to our website and hope that RAN Associations and the Returned and Services League (RSL) take more positive action regarding medals protocols and traditions.
