What is it with RAN wannabes and submarines? In the case of Army honour thieves, they are invariably ‘special forces’, ‘SAS’ or ‘snipers. And here at ANZMI we occasionally get someone swearing on sky-high pillars of bibles that he/she was an air force ‘top gun’. But recently we have seen a growing trend for maritime pretenders to suggest that they were part of the ‘silent service’. And in cases such as Mick O’Connor/Osmon they often sport the much-prized Submariners’ Qualification Badge (SQB), better known as the dolphins insignia on their jackets and coats. To say that genuine serving and former submariners are a bit peeved at this impertinence, is putting it mildly. We also suspect that they would hold him in far lesser regard than the much reviled ‘skimmers’!

From what we know about O’Connor/Osmon’s RAN service he never went anywhere near a submarine, let alone satisfied the requirements to wear the dolphins! We have been provided with information which confirms our suspicions that neither the name O’Connor or M.R. Osmon is recorded on the Service Roll of serving and former submariners. No surprises there.

Please note the Submariner Service Roll mentioned above contains an O'Connor, who is a current serving member who is not related to nor has any connection with M.R.Osman (O'Connor) who is the subject of this article.

O’Connor/Osmon served in the RAN from April 1994 until his discharge, at his own request, in October 1997. His service itself is unremarkable much of it being as a wardroom steward on shore bases.

But to add insult to injury, ‘Wardroom Mick’ has decided that he really wants to impress those who might be mesmerised by the gold dolphins by adding a few medals as well. In his proud photo we can see that he is sporting The Australian Active Service Medal (AASM), the Iraq Medal, Australian Service Medal (ASM) with an unidentifiable clasp and the Australian Defence Medal (ADM). (Drum roll please Maestro!) Needless to say ‘Silent Service Michael’ is not entitled to any of these medals!

If his AASM was genuine he would have the International Coalition Against Terrorism (ICAT) clasp attached but there is in fact no clasp on the medal at all. And we bang yet another nail into O’Connor/Osmon’s rapidly closing coffin with information that recognition for service qualifying for the Iraq Medal commenced in 2003 with Operation Catalyst. This was almost 6 years after the Navy and Mick parted company.

We suppose that we might be just a little pedantic when we examine the ASM Mick so proudly displays. The clasp might well be for Special Operations signifying a specific submarine patrol. Two Oberon class subs, HMAS Orion and HMAS Otama undertook those patrols but again, there is no information that O’Connor/Osmon ever served on either.

The RAN’s submarine service has a long and valiant history which goes back to the early days of the First World War. Those who serve aboard submarines are a special breed and take pride in their uniqueness. O’Connor/Osmon is not fit to shine the dress shoes of these undersea warriors.

So Michael Robert O’Connor/Osmon, we suggest you remove all of that unearned regalia from your coat, get rid of it and prepare to join the host of other valour thieves on the ANZMI site. Dive, dive, dive!

Surname: O'Keefe
Christian Names: Matthew Paul

City or Town: Yeppoon

Branch: logistics
Case Notes:

Matthew Paul O’Keefe born 1968 – False “Cambodia Veteran”

Beware of Matthew Paul O’Keefe; he is a liar a cheat and a wannabe.  His home base is around the Yeppoon area of Central Queensland; however he often disappears, for a few months. During 2010 he spent some time in the Burnett region of Queensland in 2011 he was at Pandanus Park the Veterans Retreat in Far North Queensland. He is expected back in Yeppoon around mid 2012

O’Keefe wears medals and claims to have;

 Attained the rank of Captain in the Australian Army;

Served in 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR);

Served in the Australian Army on active service in Cambodia.

In the photo below he is displaying evidence of those claims at a commemorative ceremony in the Yeppoon area. Notice that he is wearing the 3 RAR Beret and also wearing medals on his left breast that he did not earn.

We hold Statutory Declarations from people who were told directly by O’Keefe that he served in Cambodia. In addition we are reliably advised that O’Keefe has told others that he attained the commissioned rank of Captain during his service

Those who known O’Keefe since he was a “youngster” advise that he did serve for a short time in the Australian Army; his last posting was as a Private soldier at the Logistics Battalion in Western Australia. He was charged with theft, incarcerated in a civilian prison and discharged from the Army.  No Captains "Pips", no overseas service and no medals earned during his service. We hold two separate Cambodia Nominal Rolls of Army personnel who served in Cambodia. O'Keefe is not listed.

A few years back he was welcomed into the Yeppoon RSL and appointed Curator of the RSL Museum. He was then involved in a scandal involving dishonest dealings with medals donated to the Museum. Unfortunately in the usual way that the RSL handles these incidents it was decided to take no action for the reason most often proffered in such cases, “They did not want to bring the RSL into disrepute”.

We assert that in RSLs and other ex Service Organisations (ESO) most scandals are “covered up” by dishonest individuals in local control of the institutions.  Gutless local ESO executives, Australia wide, prefer “Cover ups” rather than bringing perpetrators to justice.

There is of course a strong possibility that many ESOs do not want law enforcement or senior ESO executives scratching around their area in case other skeletons are shaken from their cupboards.

Because of his service as a Private soldier in the Australian Regular Army, even though O’Keefe has been imprisoned by the Western Australian Justice system, he is entitled to membership of the RSL.

If he turns up at your RSL, keep a good count of your silverware, and please let us know where and when you have seen him.

Surname: Oakford
Christian Names: James
Country: Australia
State or Province: Northern Territory
City or Town: Palmerston
Case Notes:

Private (PTE) James Oakford is part of the new Veteran community, young and proud.  Proud of his service to his country and so he should be, here he is below with his awards on ANZAC Day 2013 in Palmerston, Northern Territory (NT), where he is currently serving with 5 RAR.

Oakford-1

But what James doesn’t tell you is that he is in fact a cheat, a fraud and a wannabee, he is wearing medals that he hasn’t been awarded and has no entitlement to.   You see James is a retuned serviceman in his own right and he has up until ANZAC Day 2013 served his country proud, but for some reason he has seen fit on ANZAC Day 2013, of all days to prance around with medals that he has not been awarded.

The above photo shows James wearing the following awards (left to Right):

Australian Active Service Medal 1975, with IRAQ Clasp (AASM)– NOT ENTITLED

IRAQ Campaign Medal - NOT ENTITLED

Australian Service Medal 1975 with clasp TIMOR-LESTE (ASM) – ENTITLED

Timor -Leste Solidarity Medal – ENTITLED (Foreign award should be last medal)

Australian Defence Medal  (ADM) – ENTITLED  (NOTE Should be before Timor Medal)

What puzzles us is that James has successfully completed promotion courses in preparation for him to lead other soldiers.  These courses teach leadership and integrity, something that he is expected to pass on to the junior soldiers within his Battalion; after all he is preparing to be a Junior Leader.

James unfortunately has chosen to be one of numerous current crop of serving military personnel who wish to bolster their current service and add more awards to their group than they are entitled to.

We had a plethora of emails from the NT from both ex and current serving members when the above photo of James Oakford was circulated and really you don’t have to be Einstein to work out that you don’t wear awards that you are not entitled to in a Military Town such as Palmerston NT.

PTE James Oakford due to your confirmed stupidity, and total disregard for your fellow veterans you will remain on this site for life, you have committed an offence against the Defence Act 1903 Part VII Sections 80A 80B  Improper use of service decorations this offence has a maximum penalty of a $3,300 fine or six months imprisonment or both.

Northern Territory Police have been advised of James’s offence and we hope, like many other wannabes have been; he will be arraigned, before a Magistrate and penalised. If that doesn’t happen, at least he will remain exposed on this web site as liar, fraud and wannabe.

Wannabe’s take many forms as our website can attest, some are just stupid, others are trying to ingratiate themselves in the ex-service community and will wear medals they have no entitlement to. Still others, like John Patrick O’Leary are just plain thugs who are more at home in the Domestic Violence Courts than the rifle range.

This is John Patrick O’Leary’s story. Many people have had the misfortune interacted with O’Leary and found him to be a nasty piece of work. Like so many other wannabe’s, his story of Army Service is full of daring front line action with the SAS, duty as a sniper, multiple tours of Afghanistan, ‘special work’ with the American’s and much, much more.

It may not be a surprise then, when we reveal that John Patrick O’Leary has never served as a member of the Australian Defence Force. He has never in his life stood picket, dug a hole, tied a knot or swept a tarmac. The only Mess he knows about is the trail of victims he has left in his wake.

We have statements from a number of people who have heard his gung-ho boasting but like so many others before him, he is the master of his own demise. Like so many wannabe’s O’Leary couldn’t resist talking to a reporter from the South Coast Register doing a story about of all things, street violence; something he is somewhat qualified to comment on.

O’Leary formerly resided in Darwin but has since relocated to the Nowra area. He is quiet adept at spinning yarns about his SAS service, but don’t dare question him because he has a rather nasty streak.

We have deleted a word from his Facebook post, but we think you will get the message.

In the following photograph O’Leary can be seen posing with what appear to be two Steyr Rifles. We know O’Leary has not had any form of military training but has used this photograph to add substance to his false pretence of military service.

John Patrick O’Leary is not a Veteran, nor an ex-serviceman. He is an imposter, playing on the courage and bravery of others to make himself appear to be the big man. He is much more at home threatening and committing acts of violence on those who are unable to defend themselves.

He does not have one iota of the values needed to be a member of the Australian Army, courage, initiative, respect and teamwork. O’Leary will no doubt continue with the pretense of being a former soldier, we can only hope that those who are yet to have the misfortune to cross his path read this story before being taken in by his lies.

O’Leary is no stranger to the Courts, so it should not come as a surprise to him to learn that by falsely claiming to be a Veteran of Afghanistan, he has committed the following offence against the Commonwealth.

DEFENCE ACT 1903 - SECT 80A
Falsely representing to be returned soldier, sailor or airman

(1) A person is guilty of an offence if:
(a) the person represents himself or herself to be a returned soldier, sailor or airman; and
(b) the representation is false.

Penalty: 30 penalty units or imprisonment for 6 months, or both.

(2) For the purposes of this section:

(a) returned soldier means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Military Force raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire, or as a member of the Military Forces of any Ally of Great Britain;

(b) returned sailor means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Naval Force raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire, or as a member of the Naval Forces of any Ally of Great Britain; and

(c) returned airman means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Air Force, air service or flying corps raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire or as a member of the air forces of any Ally of Great Britain

Let us hope that his continuing untruthfulness leads him to the Dock. For claiming to be a returned veteran, John Patrick O’Leary has earned a permanent place on our website for all to see.

Surname: O'Loughlan
Christian Names: Douglas Craig
Country: USA
State or Province: Now Minnasota
City or Town: Previously Bright
Service #: 3206175
Service: Army Reserve
Case Notes:

Douglas Craig O'Loughlan born 24 Jan 1964, was the President of the Bright, Victoria, Returned and Services League (RSL) until people realised he was not sufficiently bright enough to handle the job at Bright.

OLoughlan-1 2014-01-31

O'Loughlan has no entitlement to wear any Defence Medals or Badges and no entitlement to wear the coveted Sherwood Green Commando Beret .

He is the epitome of a liar cheat and wannabe. We can also add scoundrel to the list as he skipped from Bright owing lots of money.

Below is his version of his military service that he entered on the website ancesty.com:

OLoughlan-2 2014-01-31

OLoughlan-3 2014-01-31

Notice he describes himself as a Special Forces Lieutenant who served in Somalia, Timor Leste and Afghanistan and his Defence Service was from 1987 to 2007. He then lists some of the medals he is wearing in the photograph, these are:

Australian Active Service Medal

Australian Service Medal

United Nations Timor Medal

Long Service Medal

Humanitarian Medal

The photograph also shows he is wearing the coveted Infantry Combat Badge (ICB) and what could be a Returned from Active Service Badge (RASB).

The truth of his Defence Service is vastly different from what he claims. He served for a short time as a part time Private Soldier in the Royal Victorian Regiment (RVR) and was discharged in 1990. On the 1 October 2009 he was appointed Lieutenant, as an Officer of Cadets. This appointment is for training volunteer juveniles at suburban Cadet venues. His Commission has no standing in the Defence Force.

Obviously he connived his appointment as Lieutenant for the purpose of having some "Rank", however after he was commissioned he did no volunteer work at all with any Cadet unit. The situation was recognised by Cadet Headquarters and on the 21 June 2011 his Cadet Commission was revoked, and he was discharged. In recognition for doing nothing, the discharge was backdated to the same day he was appointed, that being 1 October 2009. So in fact he was officially a Cadets officer for only a few minutes.

He departed Bright to marry in Minnesota USA, where he appears to have settled. We are reliably informed that he wore the fake Dress Uniform of an Australian Army Officer complete with the Medals, Badges and Sherwood Green Commando Beret, at his wedding.

We anticipate that O'Loughlan will return to Australia for his Fiftieth birthday which also coincides with a family marriage. We have timed the release of this exposure for when he is back in Australia. This will allow the media and perhaps the Police to have a "talk" to him

Genuine Veterans are nonplussed at the plethora of RSL Presidents from Victoria who have been exposed by ANZMI.

Is it a combination of a lack of diligence by the Victoria RSL, and that members of individual RSLs simply don't care?   Like many RSL Sub Branches throughout Australia, Bright is now controlled by Affiliate Members who have never served in the Defence Force. This is an incongruous situation that must be rectified.

Our once influential and outspoken RSL has degenerated to the point where Affiliate members have full voting rights to pass any motion. In recent times at Bright, the Affiliate members pushed to close down the Bright RSL and amalgamate with the local Senior Citizens Club.

It is bizarre that motions put to Sub Branch meetings can be won or lost on the vote of Affiliate members who care nothing for the true spirit of the RSL. Our departed RSL veterans of World War 1 and World War 2 would be horrified to know what has become of the Returned Services League they established and protected for their returned war veteran members. Particularly, in Bright, Victoria.

Liars, cheats and wannabes like O'Loughlan exist, because any person who wants to "big note" themselves, can falsely claim to be a Veteran, and have Affiliate members, vote them in.

In Victoria, within the past Twelve months this is the third liar, fraud and wannabe who has attained the position of President in their RSL.

We will ensure that our associates in the United States are well aware of O'Loughlan and do not allow him to in anyway to misrepresent himself as a Commissioned Officer and Returned Australian Veteran.

O'Loughlan is a psychopathic liar who deserves his place on this web site where the world can read about him.

O'Loughlan Update

We are aware that changes have been made at the Bright RSL. There is a new Committee consisting of mainly ex Service members. Affiliate members who have never served in the Defence Force, can no longer control or subvert the Sub Branch from its core business.

A person named "Craig" has communicated with us on behalf of O'Loughlan, we are aware that it is O'Loughlan himself. Here is what he has said. It is presented as written:

"Hello, its craig. Sorry, but my phone wont allow all the data i have to send, so am using the wifes computer.

Firstly, i have known doug for many years, and i honestly believe that a great deal of the information on your site is wrong.

1/ The beret and medals he was wearing were in recognition of his deceased cousin, Brett Wood, KIA Afghanista , 22 may 2011. Albeit he had the medals on the wrong side, he has never publicly declared himself a veteran. He was proud of his short time in the reserves, and was looking at becoming a permanant member, but work took him away from any nearby units. He also did over 2 yrs as a cadet officer, and was paid as such, so a lot of misinformation on your postin regards to that.

2/ as for him returning to australia for a birthday and wedding, that is not happening due to workcommitments he has as a driver in the USA.

3/ When i contacted him in regards to his profile on your site, and explained what was stated on there, he informs me that he has never had a site on ancestry, and that his account was compromised some time ago by a zealous ex partner. He is checking with that site to confirm.

4/ As far as the bright rsl, i dont know a lot, but he has informed me that he was pressured from the start from the then president, and from veterans to become an office bearer and help straighten out a lot of inhouse problems. I know he began as secretary.

5/ As far as the information about his personal kife in bright, and financials, that should remain unposted. The business he was running was in the process of being sold, that is why he and his wife moved to her hometown to semi retire. I believe that the sale fell through, and was in the hands of legal representatives.

6/ Although i have known this man as a friend for 12 yrs, i honestly believe that there were several mistakes, misunderstandings and pressures from unmentioned parties that place a lot of negative falsities upon this claim. I have never seen him wear any medals to any anzac day ceremonies, and he attended every year out of respect. I also must say that bringing a persons personal life into a situation such as this, when there has been no conclusive prof, and a lot of heresay, is very demeaning, and a subject of defamation of character and slander.

I know that you are doing a service to the veteran community, but sometimes, people just make an honest mistake, and i honestly believe that is what has happened here, he wore a beret and medals in utterrespect for a dead relative veteran, and is being persecuted to the tenth degree for it. Please , i urge you to take down his post, he is in no way an imposter." Much of what O'Loughlan has said is easily refuted, for instance:

"1/ The beret and medals he was wearing were in recognition of his deceased cousin, Brett Wood, KIA Afghanista"

At the Bright RSL, time and time again O'Loughlan claimed to be a Returned Veteran. At no time did he speak of any of his medals being worn in honour of a deceased relative. On occasion, with false pride, he went through each and every one of them without mention that they were not his own.

"he informs me that he has never had a site on ancestry, and that his account was compromised some time ago by a zealous ex partner".

He acknowledged, the information at the Ancestry site in his speech to the members of the Bright RSL at the Annual General Meeting immediately prior to the Election of Office bearers.

"I also must say that bringing a persons personal life into a situation such as this, when there has been no conclusive prof, and a lot of heresay, is very demeaning, and a subject of defamation of character and slander."

We have all the proof necessary and invite O'Loughlan to go ahead and make a case. Our defence will be that all that we have said is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and in support of the truth, is another photograph of O'Loughlan. This time showing his less than trim carcass hanging out of a Army Polyester Uniform.

OLoughlan-4.jpg

He is again wearing medals that he has not earned, and the rank of Lieutenant that he has no right to wear. The photo is not very clear and we cannot say for sure that he is wearing an Infantry Combat Badge (ICB) that indicates that he has been deployed on Active Service with an Infantry Unit. He also appears to be wearing the silver Steyr Rifle badge on his right breast which is worn by individuals who meet all the criterion for readiness to be deployed on operational service.

Oloughlan-5

OLoughlan-6

He has no right or reason to wear either of the badges, and even if he were a real soldier, his fat gut would preclude any kind of active service.

Notice he is again wearing a brace of false medals on his left breast. O'Loughlan epitomises the reason for our existence.
We have advised all ex Service organisations in the USA to keep a watch for O'Loughlan.

He is the consummate low down liar from down under.

Surname: Osborne-Brown
Christian Names: Robert Murray
Country: Australia
State or Province: Unknown
City or Town: Unknown
Service: Army
Case Notes:

Robert Murray Osborne-Brown aka Bob Brown

As far as we can ascertain, Brown was first seen wearing an Army Colonel’s uniform in early1996 although this charade could possibly have begun a long time before that.   It was in 1996 that he told stories of  being semi-retired from the Army and of using an F-111 fighter jet as personal transport.

Some further false claims made by Brown are:

Served with 4RAR in Malaya/Borneo and from there was posted to Duntroon Military College for Officer training.
He told of being the Company Commander of an American Company serving in the DMZ during the war and apparently it was Thanksgiving Day for the Americans at the DMZ, the day was celebrated by helicopters flying overhead throwing frozen turkeys on parachutes to the Company below.

He had been shot in the face, had numerous operations and was due to have another one in Adelaide. Later photographs don’t show any signs of any facial alteration or reconstructive surgery.

He received a field commission (promoted to Officer) in Viet Nam.

Served in the Falklands during the war there. [No Australian Military personnel served in that conflict]

Recipient of the US Purple Heart and actually gave one to an Australian  friend because the friend had been wounded and didn’t have one. The Purple Heart is an US Military award and not recognised by the Australian Government for wearing while in uniform.

Lectures on PTSD to Army personnel, in uniform, at $300 per hour. A video of one of these supposed lectures shows Brown and a blackboard but no one else in the room. These lectures were supposedly also carried out at 1Recruit Training Battalion [RTB], Kapooka.

He said he was in receipt of a 60% disability compensation payment from the Dept of Veteran’s Affairs and this percentage could be higher now if true. It is known that he pursued a claim for war caused disability through a Viet Nam Veterans organisation.

More information;

He visited 1RTB, Kapooka, in 1998 with a friend and was “treated like royalty”. It would appear that the staff there had met him before and regarded him to be a highly decorated Colonel. This visit was to firm up arrangements that Brown had made for his former recruit platoon’s 35th anniversary to be held on the base. He had received donations from his former recruit training mates to produce newsletters but there were only three ever produced.
During this reunion Brown awarded a trophy to an outstanding Recruit.

Note the row of ribbands and the Infantry Combat Badge (ICB) in this photo. These are the ribbands for the Australian Active Service Medal, Viet Nam Medal, what we believe to be the Multi National Force and Observers Medal (Sinai Desert, 1982, Military) and the Viet Nam Campaign Medal.
Photo of this presentation here.

Note the three rows of ribbands with the ICB in this photo below taken in 1996, plus the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation on his right breast. Note his sloppy presentation, button undone and wearing a uniform a lot too big for him.
Photo in uniform here.

Osborne-Brown contacted a well known Viet Nam Veteran for assistance and claimed the following Honours and awards:

Order of Australia, (AO),
Distinguished Service Order (DSO Imperial award, Officers),
Military Cross with Bar (that is twice awarded the MC),
Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM Imperial award Other Ranks) (equivalent to DSO),
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal,
US Meritorious Unit Commendation
South Vietnamese Unit Gallantry Cross with Palm.

Some more of his claims that have been forwarded to us:

Four tours to Viet Nam, 1RAR and AATTV (Australian Army Training Team Viet Nam)
Three years with the Pacific Islands Regiment (PIR) PNG,
British Special Air Services (22 SAS Squadron),
Two tours Ulster using the name McGregor so the Australian government could deny his presence there,
Attached US Marine Corps
Commissioned as an Officer by the Chief of the general Staff, Sir Thomas Daly, during a parade at Holsworthy Army Camp.

This person received what was very close to a dishonourable discharge after serving in the Army for two years and ten months.  He did not serve overseas in any capacity while with the Australian Regular Army and never rose above the rank of Lance Corporal.

Below are more photos of Osborne Brown.  They are:

His platoon photograph taken at Kapooka in 1963

Osborne - Brown in Camouflage Uniform

and his reunion photos, Kapooka 1998

In this age where terrorism is high on the list of Security measures for this nation, the bonefides of anyone presenting himself in uniform to any Military establishment as a visiting lecturer should be established well before he is allowed on base.  In this instance it is a matter of a fraud infiltrating, however, what is to stop a real terrorist from doing the same and mapping the military area for future reference towards targets???  The sale of medals, uniforms and accoutrements should be controlled.  This is an Australian government responsibility that is ignored completely.

If you should know the whereabouts of Robert Osborne - Brown, aka Bob Brown please contact the site as there are members of his old platoon who would like to catch up with him.  Please use the file entry below for contact.
